Judge Bryan Hettenbach was appointed circuit judge in April 2008. He was retained in 2010, 2016 and 2022.

He has presided over hundreds of circuit court trials and currently handles a docket of criminal and civil jury trials. Judge Hettenbach has also handled dockets of equity non-jury trials and motions and a docket of probate cases. He did a two-year stint as administrative docket controller for all criminal felony cases in the St. Louis Circuit. He was elected by his colleagues to serve as assistant presiding judge in 2013 and 2014, and as presiding judge in 2015 and 2016.

Upon graduation from law school, Judge Hettenbach worked as a staff attorney at the Missouri Supreme Court. He then worked as a lawyer in in private practice in St. Louis for more than two decades, becoming a named partner in a general civil practice law firm. He also served as news editor of the Missouri Lawyers Weekly publication and as an adjunct professor of legal studies. He was certified as a civil law and family court mediator, and was a frequent contributor to continuing legal education programs for the Missouri Bar and other legal organizations. He did recurring service as a guardian ad litem representing children in family and juvenile court cases, including several years as a contract attorney for the St. Louis Circuit juvenile court.

Judge Hettenbach, a St. Louis native, has a bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia, a master's degree from the University of Michigan and a juris doctor from the University of Missouri Columbia School of Law.
